The 3 R's

Today was all about the 3 R's. This is not what I had planned on my lesson plans today but he was in a reading mood and who am I to stop someone on a reading binge.

He wanted to read before school and I said sure, well he keep bringing out more books to read. He would go pick one out of his bookcase, climb on the couch and read. He picked a few new ones, mostly oldie but goodies for him. It is nice to see that Clifford the big red dog is still funny. He read for 1.5 hours.

That was a good deal of reading even for him. So I skipped history and language today since he had read so much already. We drove straight into handwriting where we wrote a birthday note for Uncle Paul and wrote his poem from yesterday.

Then it was onto Singapore math where he did 7 worksheets. He was having fun with math today. We then had a 6 week review of spelling in our spelling workbook, which he got all 20 answers correct and was able to get an item out of the treasure chest, he picked a mini lego racer.

There will be plenty of time tomorrow for history and language but today he had a great time just reading and reading and reading.

First Poem

Little Bit was helping me make a pumpkin topiary for the front porch and while working with the silk flowers he made up a poem. Being only 5 and me being his Mom I was impressed.

Flowers flowers everywhere
Flowers drooping and flowers wilting

Muffin Tin Monday - Sick Day

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth

Today is Muffin Tin Monday and there is no theme for today. For today, I did a favorite snack sick food theme. He is still a bit under the weather from the allergic reaction he had to the flu shot last week. He is eating better but not much and still doesn't have much energy. I made a tin of some of his favorites snacks for him to munch on through out the day. There is:

Grape Juice
Babybel cheese
Ritz crackers
Cantaloupe
Granola Bar
Peanuts - in the cutest little pail we got at Logans Roadhouse

Weekly Review - Sick

There is not much to review this week seeing as he has been sick since last Saturday. He had his flu shot on Saturday morning and 4 hours later he started getting sick. He has had an allergic reaction to the flu shot. He has had a high fever (which never goes well with his heart condition), vomiting, lethargic and was unable to keep anything down for 3 days. We finally got over the fever and vomiting to develop a nasty cough. I will not be a surprised if we end up at the doctor again for antibiotics and steroids.

Hopefully next week will be better.

Muffin Tin Monday - The Polar Express

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth

Today is muffin tin Monday, the theme for this week is children's literature. Last week I asked, what book he would want to use and he picked The Polar Express. So, I started trying to think what to do. I decided that we would do our muffin tin on Sunday night, that way we could read the book together as a family.

This is what I made:
Hot Chocolate
Smore Train - The Polar Express
Hershey Kiss - for the bell
Whipped cream - snow
Candy Cane - North Pole
Caramel - I made caramel in a can today and had to try it!

Weekly Review - Week 10

This has been a busy and tiring week. My insomnia is in full force this week and I have decided insomnia makes homeschooling difficult. Little Bit is trying to get used to sparring class and as expected it is making him extra tired and when he gets overtired he does not sleep well. We are a tired bunch this week.

We did manage to get a week of school in. We made great progress in First Language Lessons and he went through a multitude of math this week.

You can see on the math sheet if he is not sure of the answer he makes small dots or lines next to the problem to count. It is a creative way to find the answer to his problem, that he came up with.

While reading from the Story of the World one day this week, he drew this map. It shows the Tigris, Euphrates with Mesopotamia between them.

For handwriting one day, we wrote MeMaw a letter to send her along with some photos of her great grandson.

Ignoring the water bottle in the foreground, this is how this week felt. We are both tired. Hopefully next week we will feel a bit better.

Granny Smith apple slices
Cream cheese and peanut butter for dipping
Cheese and crackers
Fruit salad in a apple bowl.

Magic School Bus - Secrets of Space Science Experiment

To finish out our unit study of the solar system we opened our Secrets of Space science box from Magic School Bus. It was great fun. There was plenty to do and included some great experiments for us to so. It also came with model of the solar system to build but I am saving that for a rainy day.

Today we built a telescope, used a flashlight with the "earth and moon" provided to see the phases and positions of the moon, and made a scaled version of the solar system. It was a lot of fun and took about 1 hour to finish our experiments. I am really enjoying the Magic School Bus science experiments this year, they have been well worth the price.

Weekly Review - First 9 Weeks

This week was our 9th week in this homeschool year. On Thursday and Friday of this week, I did a review of everything we have learned so far. I wanted to see how much information he had retained and see the progress from week 1 to week 9.

History

We did a review of the first 7 chapters of the Story of the World, other than having trouble being able to define history and archeology he remembered all the stories we had read and was able to answers all the questions from the activity book. He was able to give a narrative of the stories when asked. He loves the map work that comes with the activity book and I will be adding more map and geography to our lessons.

Spelling

I went back and picked one or two spelling words from each week and he was able to spell them. We also made a sentence from each word. Beginning next week I will be writing down the sentences he comes up with for the spelling words, because the are usually funny. I would like to keep a record of these, I am sure I will look back one day and laugh.

Math

I did a timed math fact sheet just to see how well his math facts are coming along. He has no trouble with the Singapore 1B workbook, or the word problems book. He is moving through them at such a fast pace, I have started spending more time working on learning and getting our math facts down and less time with the Singapore books. I can see a huge improvement from week 1 to now, I feel the daily practice we are doing is helping him memorize his math facts.

Handwriting

Handwriting was a problem last year and is still our most difficult task this year. He just does not like it, he thinks since he knows how to make all the letters there is no reason to practice getting better and learning to write neatly and within the lines. This year I started back with just tracing, not making him write anything just practice tracing the letters and words exactly. I took a laid back approach and did not push him to hand write, I let him use the dry ease board to write when he wanted to. The past two weeks I have introduced more handwriting where he is writing words he picks, his name, spelling words, etc. He is working harder at staying in the lines and trying to make each letter correctly. I feel the more laid back approach to handwriting is working for him.

Reading

The only challenge we have with reading is finding books for him to read. He loves to read just like Mom and Dad, reading a book a day is not a problem with him. He is a 5 year old who can read and comprehend on a 5Th grade level. Finding books that are age appropriate and interesting to him is a challenge. He has been reading the Magic Tree House chapters books and loves them. He is all most finished with the set I have and I am looking at buying the hardback ones for Christmas. We have read a few of the Magic Tree House research books, they add a lot more information than the books do. We also have read a few Magic School Bus chapter books. For read aloud books, we read The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War, a book on the solar system and a few others he picked out for us to read, We will be starting King Arthur and his knights of the round table by Roger Green this next week.

French, Bible, and Language

He has retained the information from French, Bible and language with no trouble.

I am impressed with how much he has learned and retained that means what we are doing is working. We will be starting Kinderbach in October. When his swim lessons are over and we are staying home more do to flu and cold season, kinderbach will be a fun addition to our day. We have been listening to a classical piece of music everyday.

Even though the daily challenges of homeschooling are daunting somedays, I love homeschooling and seeing his progress on a daily basis.

Solar System Unit Study

We are doing a small unit study on the solar system this week. I found a coloring booklet of the solar system to print and we will be reading Magic School Bus Space Explorers chapter book and The Planets in Our Solar System.

Last night we were able to get out the telescope and see the moon. Here are a few pictures hubby took with the camera attached to the telescope.

Muffin Tin Monday - Cheese Smorgasbord

Muffin Tin Monday at Her Cup Overfloweth

Today is Muffin Tin Monday. There was no theme for this week so we had a favorite. This is his all time favorite lunch, we call cheese and cracker smorgasbord. Basically it is cheese and crackers and what ever else I can come up to serve with it. He loves this lunch, sometimes he wants me to make it and sometimes, he comes up with his own concoctions. It makes a super quick meal.

Today we had:
Babybel cheese
Laughing cow cheese (loves to spread this on apple slices)
Cheddar slices
Apple Slices
Gogurt
Ritz crackers

Weekly Review - A week off

There is not much to report this week. We took the week off! The weather was great and we were able to enjoy the outdoors and cooler temperatures. He had a great time playing in his sandbox, riding bikes and just being outside.

He had his first sparring class this week, he did really well. It tired him out like I thought it would and he was exhausted the next day. He also went to his first NFL football games this week and had a great time!

We did learn a few things this week. He learned the place value up to the millions place, playing Star Wars Lego on the Wii and he learned how to count by 7s at the football game.

I enjoyed the break and look forward to next week.
